One of the most misunderstood platforms in Social Media is Twitter.

WHY do I say that?  Great question.  I get the most questions and confusion when I talk about Twitter with local business owners.  So, I have brought on the radio show someone who has been able to use Twitter in a very powerful way for their business.  I am talking about Frank Eliason with Comcast.

Comcast cares is a program that was started back in 2007.  Frank is the Digital Director Care in Comcast.  He vision and job is to be aggressive listeners online to customers who express their frustration online.

Are you already seeing the value in what Comcast is doing that you might duplicate in your business?

Comcast original online presence was not on Twitter.  They visited forums, blogs, personal sites and many other places that seemed foreign to many companies.  It was Scott Westerman their VP of the Southwest region suggested to Frank “have you ever checked out Twitter?  It would be a perfect place for you.”

Frank and his team at Comcast have been revolutionaries in social media to use Twitter in a way that many businesses have not used Twitter and frankly (no pun intended giggle) a LOT are afraid to use Twitter-complaints.

Frank and his team have done something that reminds  me of what a colleague has suggested to corporate clients who use social media…find a way to personalize who you are as well as brand yourself so it is clear who you speak for…Frank and his team have done that with their Twitter ID’s.

Frank’s Twitter ID is @ComcastCares.  Some of the rest of the Care team are @ComcastBonnie, @ComcastSteve, @ComcastBill, @ComcastSherri, @ComcastDete, @ComcastMelissa, @ComcastGeorge.

Frank and his team are open about what they have learned.  I can share my own story with you and how beneficial ComcastCares has been in uncovering opportunities for the local Houston office.

Frank has taken the simple statement “How can I help you” to a whole new level that you can learn from to benefit your business.

One thing that Comcast has done is create a blog (Comcast Voices) that allows you to learn more about the people at Comcast.  Why does that matter to you?  For the same reason it should matter to you that your customers can connect with you and your staff.  People want to know you CARE today.  As consumers, they are frankly sick and tired of being a commodity to the companies they do business with today.  Frank and his team at Comcast recognizes that and are a shining light in the business world showing you how you can do that for your business too.
